2020 International Year of the Nurse & Midwife – July Edition

We continue to celebrate ‘The Year of the Nurse & Midwife’ by showcasing Hurstville’s very own Hilda Foya. Hilda is one of our Registered Nurses at our Hurstville Private Hospital and has shared her story of how she begun her nursing career and details her achievements along the way.

What year did you commence your nursing career?

I started my nursing career in Zimbabwe in May 1997.

What hospitals have you worked at?

Throughout my career, I have worked in a number of hospitals. After qualifying, I spent my first 4 years working in Zimbabwe. I then relocated to Australia, where I worked at St George Public Hospital, St George Private and Hurstville Private Hospital.

What year did you commence employment at Hurstville Private Hospital?

I commenced employment at Hurstville Private Hospital in November 2017,as a casual Registered Nurse in the surgical ward. During my time at Hurstville I have also worked as the Hospital In Charge at times.

Why did you choose to become a nurse?

I have always admired the nurse’s uniform, especially the nurse’s cap, which they used to wear during the early days, because of this, I applied for nursing training immediately after I completed my year 12 studies. Where I grew up, nursing is recognised as one of the top jobs.

Where did you complete your training?

In Zimbabwe on 5 May 2000

Provide a highlight in your career that you would like to share

I cannot believe that I have been working as a Registered Nurse for 20 years now. I really love seeing patients recover and return back home feeling much better. It’s a joy and pleasure to see and hear patients appreciating the work we do as nurses.
