Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Sleeve Gastrectomy (also known as Gastric Sleeve surgery) is an operation where about a large part of your stomach is removed leaving behind a narrow gastric (stomach) sleeve.
Gastric sleeve (also known as a Sleeve Gastrectomy) is a form of bariatric surgery, also called weight loss surgery. It is sometimes recommended for people who are very obese, or who have health problems caused by obesity. You should only consider gastric sleeve surgery after trying alternatives.
The first step is usually to try changes to your food intake and your daily activity and exercise. There are also some medicines that can help people lose weight. Surgery is usually thought about only after these other options have been tried.
After the surgery, the vastly decreased stomach capacity means that you will feel full after eating a small amount of food.
You might also feel less hungry, because your smaller stomach will produce lower levels of a hormone called ghrelin, which causes hunger.
Losing weight after gastric sleeve surgery can help reduce problems like Type 2 diabetes, asthma episodes and blood pressure and can help improve heart health.
Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass involves dividing the stomach in two to form a gastric (stomach) pouch.
The small intestine is divided, and one end joined to the gastric pouch. Gastric secretions from the large portion of the stomach, as well as bile and pancreatic juices, mix with the food you eat - downstream, where the small intestine is joined to itself. The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic through 5 laparoscopic (keyhole) incisions.
This new arrangement results in patients feeling fuller after eating and influences the way fat and carbohydrates are processed internally.
Who Is Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass For?
Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass surgery is a form of weight loss surgery. It is sometimes recommended for people who very obese or have other health problems and have tried hard to lose weight by dieting and doing more exercise.
Your doctor might suggest gastric bypass surgery to help with weight loss
