Hurstville Private Hospital Is First in Australia to Offer Robotic Procedures with Newest Technology

Hurstville Private Hospital is the first in Australia to offer patients access to minimally invasive procedures with the newest robotic technology on the market, Hugo™ Robotic Assisted Surgery (RAS) system.

“This is an incredibly exciting moment for Hurstville Private Hospital as we continue to expand our portfolio of offerings in robotic-assisted surgery. The Hugo RAS system is an investment in our patients and underscores our commitment to provide them with the latest advancements in medical technology and the best possible care.” Martina Goddard, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Hurstville Private Hospital

The surgeon who performed the first procedures was Gynaecologist, Dr Danny Chou, advises - "Hugo RAS is the latest surgical robotic platform with enhanced capability that facilitates surgical procedures and it’s a very exciting advancement in the field of minimal invasive gynaecological surgery"

This is a major milestone for Hurstville Private Hospital we’re taking another step forward to bring the benefits of RAS to more people in more places.

As a form of minimally invasive surgery, robotic-assisted surgery offers the potential for fewer complications, less blood loss, shorter hospital stays, faster return to normal activities, and smaller scars.1–3

The Hugo system is uniquely designed as a modular and flexible RAS system with an open console and powerful data and analytics capabilities including Touch Surgery™ Enterprise to record, store, and analyse surgical videos.

During Hugo™ RAS system procedures, the surgeon sits at an open console, which displays a high-definition 3D view of the surgical field and allows them to precisely control the robotic arms and instruments and maintain communication with operating room staff.

Hurstville Private Hospital in Sydney's south has been recognised as a Centre of Excellence in Robotic Surgery, Colorectal Surgery and Minimally Invasive Surgery by the Surgical Review Corporation, the first hospital in Sydney to be recognised with the prestigious accreditation.

Hurstville Private Hospital is Sydney South’s premier private health facility providing acute surgical, maternity and medical services since 1924. First accredited as a Centre of Excellence for Minimally Invasive Surgery, Colorectal Surgery and Robotic Surgery in 2019, Hurstville Private was recently recognised again as a leader in the field, with accreditation for a further 3 years.

About robotic-assisted surgery

Robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) has been identified as an emerging medical technology with the potential to help standardise surgical procedures and enable minimally invasive surgery (MIS). MIS may improve patient outcomes, and reduce health system costs.1-3

Clinical benefits of RAS, therefore, depend on the surgical application of the technology. For example, applied in certain soft tissue procedures, benefits include fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, faster return to normal activities, and smaller scars, as compared to open surgery.1-3
