Dr Alejandra Izurieta became an obstetrician, gynaecologist and fertility subspecialist because "assisting women in creating a life and being part of the arrival of new human being could not be a greater privilege and is an incredibly rewarding experience".
Women face many challenges in their journey from adolescence to menopause and being able to provide expert continuity of care from conception to the delivery of a baby, and easing the hormonal roller coaster throughout their reproductive and post reproductive life gives purpose to my role.
Education, service and commitment have underpinned appointments as a fertility specialist at IVF Australia, and VMO and staff specialist at the Royal Hospital for women. Here I was responsible for the coordination of the GP antenatal shared care program and the postgraduate educational program for GPs practicing women’s health in the community. I am currently a conjoint lecturer and examiner at UNSW involved with the teaching, training and mentoring of undergraduate and postgraduate students. I pride myself on a dynamic approach to teaching.
Much of my training was in Southern Sydney, and although my career has taken me elsewhere the networks and friendships created in the south have lured me back. I look forward to strengthening these ties as I return to practice here. So, now that it is time to settle into my private practice, I have chosen Hurstville Private Hospital to call ‘home’.
With an incredible family of healthcare providers at Hurstville I have no doubt my patients will receive the best in care. I will carry their trust on my shoulders and endeavour to ensure my women feel heard in their concerns, safe in my hands and respected as a women.
